Homecoming is a magical time of year for students across America. In high schools, Spirit Week brings out the best in staff and students by organizing spirit events, dances, pep rallies, and culminating in a sporting event.
With Homecoming Kings and Homecoming Queens, and everyone in between, sometimes knowing how to style your hair or what to wear can be overwhelming. In fact, if your school’s homecoming has a formal dance, you might have to go back to the drawing board.
The good news is that we’re here to help. If you need inspiration for homecoming hairstyles, we have you covered. Read on to discover some of our hairstyles for homecoming.
What Is Homecoming?
Homecoming is a big event for high schools and colleges across the United States. For high schools, it’s an event that brings the school together through Spirit Week. During Spirit Week events, students can wear school colors, and many other fun themes may be determined by students and staff.
Aside from spirit week, homecoming culminates in a sporting event, usually football, along with a parade and a homecoming dance. Homecoming events also tend to have a homecoming court, which includes a king, queen, duke, and duchess.
The court often determines some events and handles some planning. Students can enter their positions with nominations from staff and other students, but it depends on school rules.
Homecoming Hairstyles
Homecoming isn’t just a single event, so you may need to bust out different hairstyles based on the day. For example, you may need a more formal hairstyle for the dance, and a more relaxed hairdo for the sporting event and pep rally.
Fortunately, we have plenty of homecoming hairstyle ideas to help you out. Learn about our top five favorites below.
Messy Bun
You can’t go wrong with a messy bun for most of the spirit week. Whether it’s school color day, crazy hat day, or some other fun spirit event, rocking a messy bun is a great way to take a relaxed approach to homecoming this year.
You can toss it up top or have it towards the back of your head, how you style it is up to you, but making it look messy is fun, hassle-free, and perfect for those days when you’re adding artificial coloring.
Glamorous Waves and a Headband
The ultimate school spirit look is one where you’re rocking a headband with your school’s colors. Whether you’re going to the game, dressing up in school colors, or attending the pep rally, adding waves with a headband is a great homecoming hairstyle.
To achieve this look all you have to do is curl your hair, brush it out a bit, and add a cute headband. We love this one because it’s perfect for most homecoming events, aside from the formal ones.
90’s High Ponytail
Styles come and go pretty fast, and while the 90s happened a long time ago, the high ponytail is making a comeback. Achieving this look is similar to making your standard ponytail, but a little higher up.
Make a side part, tuck a small section of bangs behind your ear, and pull your hair into a ponytail. To complete the ponytail you can wrap a piece of your hair in the hair tie.
Pin Straight Hair
Straight hair is always a good choice when you’re going to homecoming events. It’s one of the easiest hairstyles to achieve because all you need is a straightener. You can add a headband, color, or even layers to complete the look.
Pin-straight hair is also flexible because you can put it up into a bun or ponytail if you have to walk the halls during the day but play a sport later. What’s more, straight hair is appropriate for formal events like the homecoming dance if your school has one.
French Twist
Does your homecoming have a dance? If so, you’ll likely need to have a classy and formal homecoming hairstyle. For formal events, one of our favorite homecoming hairstyles is the French twist.
It’s perfect for open-back dresses and adds a touch of elegance to any homecoming dress. Plus, it’s not too hard to style once you get the hang of it, and since homecoming dances aren’t as formal as prom, it’s okay if it’s a little messy.
Show Up to Homecoming in Style
Regardless of the homecoming event, showing up in style is important in high school. It can help you make a good impression, match your friends, or even make your life easier if you play a sport.
That said, if you’re in the homecoming court or have a dance to attend, we recommend going the more formal route – you’ll thank us later. And if you haven’t found your perfect homecoming dress yet, we recommend checking out this homecoming collection as it offers a ton of styles.
